Inside the NFL GM Carousel: Why Jon-Eric Sullivan Is Staying in Green Bay—for Now

The NFL’s General Manager carousel has been in full swing during the 2025 hiring cycle, and one of the most interesting stories has been the future of Green Bay Packers’ personnel executive Jon-Eric Sullivan. Despite interviewing with four different teams for their GM vacancies, Sullivan will remain with the Packers for at least another year, continuing his long tenure with the organization.

Sullivan, the Packers’ vice president of player personnel, was a finalist for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ GM position, but the team ultimately decided to hire James Gladstone. In addition to Jacksonville, Sullivan had interviews with the New York Jets, Tennessee Titans, and Las Vegas Raiders, but each of these teams chose to hire other candidates.

Having spent over two decades in Green Bay, Sullivan’s path within the Packers organization has been a steady climb, showing his deep knowledge and commitment to the team. His journey with Green Bay began back in 2003 when he joined as an intern. From there, Sullivan rose through the ranks, becoming an area scout from 2008 to 2015, before moving on to roles as director of college scouting and co-director of player personnel. In 2022, he was promoted to vice president of player personnel, further solidifying his influence in shaping the Packers’ roster.

While it might seem surprising that Sullivan didn’t land a GM role this cycle after such a strong showing, there’s no doubt that he is on the radar of multiple teams looking for leadership in the front office. His experience, combined with his deep understanding of player evaluation, has positioned him as a top candidate for future GM searches.

As Sullivan looks to return for his 22nd season with the Packers in 2025, it seems clear that the NFL isn’t done with him yet. His repeated interviews and the fact that he has been a finalist in multiple high-profile searches suggest that, in 2026, he could very well be back on the GM market with an even stronger chance of securing the position he’s long pursued.

For now, Sullivan’s loyalty and expertise remain a crucial asset for the Packers, who continue to build for the future under general manager Brian Gutekunst. But it’s only a matter of time before the NFL calls on Sullivan again—whether that be next season or in the years to come.
