Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has broken his silence on the growing rumors about his retirement plans, putting an end to speculation following the team’s recent Super Bowl loss. At 67 years old and fresh off a tough defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59, Reid’s future in the NFL was called into question. However, the three-time Super Bowl champion made it clear that he has no intention of stepping away from the game anytime soon.
Reid, who signed a multi-year extension last year to remain with the Chiefs through the 2029 season, has been at the helm for 26 years. Despite the brutal Super Bowl loss, he revealed that he is not ready to retire just yet, citing the advice he received from his parents as the guiding force behind his decision.
Speaking candidly at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Reid shared a personal moment with CBS Sports, explaining the advice his parents gave him when he asked them about their own retirement at the age of 65. “I asked, ‘Why did you retire when you got to that 65 age?'” Reid recalled. His parents simply told him, “You’ll just know. You’ll know when the time is.”
Reid’s response was clear: “And I go, ‘Oh okay.’ I know it’s not now, so that’s not today.” For the coach, the moment to step away hasn’t arrived yet, and it seems he is far from ready to hang up his whistle.
The announcement was met with cheers from fans and social media users alike, many expressing admiration for Reid’s dedication to the game. One fan wrote, “They don’t make them like Coach Reid any longer! What a stud.” Another added, “Andy Reid is a competitive guy or he wouldn’t be a coach.” And one more simply stated, “You gotta love Big Red.”
When asked about his pursuit of the all-time head coaching wins record, Reid downplayed its significance. While the legendary Don Shula holds the record with 328 wins, followed by George Halas (318) and Bill Belichick (302), Reid trails with 273 wins. However, the 67-year-old emphasized that his focus remains on teaching and leading his team, not chasing records. “If you asked me how many wins I have right now, I couldn’t tell you,” he said. “I don’t care about all that. I’m in this to teach.”
Reid’s main focus remains on his team and their future, with the goal of winning his fourth Super Bowl in the upcoming 2025 season. While the Chiefs’ dreams of a three-peat were dashed by the Eagles, Reid’s competitive spirit remains as strong as ever. The veteran coach is already looking ahead to the next season, determined to return to the big game once again.
As he gears up for another year with Kansas City, one thing is clear: Andy Reid isn’t going anywhere just yet. His passion for the game, driven by the wisdom of his parents, ensures that he will remain a dominant figure on the sidelines for years to come.
