Jets Open to Trading Davante Adams—Could a Green Bay Comeback Be in the Works?

Green Bay — The Davante Adams trade saga is officially underway, and with the New York Jets fielding calls on the six-time 1,000-yard receiver, the question arises: Could the former Packers star be making a return to Green Bay?
Reports surfaced over the weekend that the Jets are entertaining trade offers for Adams, who they acquired from the Las Vegas Raiders last season. However, if they cannot find a trade partner, the team is prepared to release the 32-year-old wideout, whose contract still has two years remaining.
Adams, a three-time first-team All-Pro, has long been regarded as one of the most dynamic receivers in the NFL, and his potential availability has piqued the interest of several teams. A source close to the player indicated last month that Adams is “open” to rejoining the Packers, a sentiment that has undoubtedly fueled speculation. However, Green Bay general manager Brian Gutekunst remained tight-lipped when asked about Adams during the NFL Scouting Combine, maintaining his policy of not commenting on players under contract with other teams.
Despite this, the idea of a reunion isn’t as far-fetched as it might seem. Adams had his best years in Green Bay, where he set single-season franchise records for receptions (123) and receiving yards (1,553) in 2021. His chemistry with quarterback Aaron Rodgers was unmatched, making him one of the league’s top targets during his time in Green Bay. In fact, Adams caught more passes, more yards, and more touchdowns than any NFL player from 2016 through 2021, a testament to his dominance during that stretch.
However, Adams was traded to the Raiders in 2022 after the Packers franchise-tagged him, marking the end of an era in Green Bay. Now, with the Jets looking to part ways with him, the prospect of Adams returning to Titletown is a tantalizing one.
The Jets’ decision to move on from Adams was made clear when they acknowledged his hefty salary cap hit for the next few seasons. With a $35.64 million base salary for 2025 and 2026, coupled with a jaw-dropping $38.3 million salary cap number for 2025, the Jets are looking to offload Adams in the coming weeks. General manager Darren Mougey confirmed Adams’ current status on the roster, saying, “Davante is on the team right now. Obviously, we have a plan there, and in the next few weeks, we will kind of address that issue. But Davante is on the team.”
While the Jets figure out their next move, other teams are also weighing their options. The Green Bay Packers, who have been dealing with injuries and inconsistency at the wide receiver position, may find a proven player like Adams a valuable asset. With Christian Watson recovering from a significant knee injury, and Romeo Doubs dealing with concussion issues, the Packers’ receiving corps could use a boost. Even Packers players like running back Josh Jacobs, cornerback Keisean Nixon, and quarterback Jordan Love have reportedly been working to recruit Adams back to Green Bay.
During an appearance on Radio Row leading up to Super Bowl LIX, Jacobs said, “I love the guys that we have in the receiving room. They all have the potential to be a (No.) 1. But we need a guy that’s proven to be one.” The addition of Adams could fill that void, providing quarterback Jordan Love with a reliable weapon as he looks to take the reins of the offense.
But the question remains: What would the Packers be willing to give up to acquire Adams? With the Jets possibly cutting him if no trade materializes, the Packers’ decision on whether to pursue him might depend on the asking price.
As Adams himself put it when asked about Green Bay’s wide receiver situation, “It’s looking right now like, obviously, they might need some receiver help in one way or the other just based off of what they have available. And maybe a veteran or something in there. I don’t know. We’ll see.”
Whether a reunion is in the cards or not, the coming weeks will certainly be crucial for both Adams and the Packers. The wide receiver’s next destination could have a significant impact on his career, but for now, it remains a waiting game. With trade talks heating up and the Jets likely ready to make a move, Adams’ future—whether it’s in New York, Green Bay, or elsewhere—will soon become clear.
