WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT/Gray News) – From the gridiron to law enforcement, former Green Bay Packers defensive tackle Jay Ross is tackling a new challenge in his post-NFL career. This week, Ross, who played a pivotal role in the Packers’ Super Bowl XLV victory, was promoted to Sergeant by the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office in Southeastern North Carolina.
After retiring from football, Ross chose to return to his hometown of Wilmington and dedicate himself to protecting his community as a law enforcement officer. His journey from NFL player to Sheriff’s deputy is a testament to his commitment to service and his deep roots in the Wilmington area. Ross, who also played for East Carolina University before joining the New Orleans Saints in 2010, made his way to the Packers the same year. His football career culminated with the Super Bowl win in 2011. By 2013, Ross retired from the NFL while with the Buffalo Bills.
But rather than resting on his laurels, Ross chose to give back to the community that shaped him. He joined the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy and quickly proved his dedication. In a special ceremony this week, Ross was promoted to Sergeant, taking on the responsibility of supervising the School Resource Officer Unit.
“Jay Ross has long been a role model in our community, first as a standout high school athlete, then as a professional in the NFL, and now as a dedicated law enforcement officer,” said Sheriff Ed McMahon. “His leadership, integrity, and commitment to the safety and well-being of our students make him the perfect choice for this role.”
Ross’s new role comes after a decade of service within the Sheriff’s Office, including time in the Vice Narcotics Unit. The promotion to Sergeant is a recognition of his hard work and his unwavering dedication to the safety of the Wilmington community.
In an emotional statement following the promotion, Ross expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue serving in a new capacity. “Being promoted to the rank of Sergeant after 10 years with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, particularly serving in the Vice Narcotics Unit, is both an honor and a responsibility,” Ross said. “It represents years of dedication, hard work, and a commitment to protecting our community. I’m proud to step into this leadership role and continue serving with integrity, accountability, and purpose.”
As a Wilmington native who rose to fame in the NFL, Ross’s journey is an inspiring example of how athletes can transition into impactful careers beyond sports. His promotion to Sergeant highlights his enduring passion for service, and his leadership will undoubtedly continue to make a difference in the community he calls home.
