Packers Eye Defensive Overhaul—Could Josh Sweat Be the Missing Piece?

The Green Bay Packers are looking to fortify their defensive line after a disappointing 2025 season, where they struggled to consistently pressure opposing quarterbacks. With free agency fast approaching, Green Bay is expected to make a big splash and strengthen their defense, particularly the pass rush, to stay competitive in the NFC.

When the NFL’s legal tampering period begins on March 10, all eyes will be on the Packers, as they are projected to break from tradition and actively pursue key free agents. While addressing their No. 1 wide receiver and cornerback positions may be at the top of their wish list, ESPN insider Rob Demovsky believes that the Packers may surprise many by aggressively targeting a veteran pass rusher to elevate their defense.

One player who stands out as a potential game-changer for Green Bay is Philadelphia Eagles star Josh Sweat. ESPN’s projection suggests the Packers could make a significant four-year, $72 million offer, including $24 million in guaranteed money, to secure the 27-year-old edge rusher. This deal would allow the Packers to bolster their pass rush, an area that was notably absent during their wild-card playoff exit, where the Eagles dominated the line of scrimmage.

Green Bay’s defensive coordinator, Jeff Hafley, has emphasized the importance of putting pressure on the quarterback without relying on blitzing, a strategy that failed to consistently deliver in 2025. Sweat, known for his ability to disrupt offenses, could provide exactly what the Packers need to return to playoff contention.

Sweat, coming off a stellar 2024 season with the Eagles, showcased his pass-rushing prowess with 8 sacks, 9 tackles for loss, and 15 quarterback hits. His performance in the Super Bowl, where he recorded 2.5 sacks in Philadelphia’s win over the Kansas City Chiefs, only increased his value. With Sweat entering the prime of his career, the Packers could land a key piece for their defense that could form a powerful duo alongside their other defensive stars, including Rashan Gary, Kenny Clark, Devonta Wyatt, and Lukas Van Ness.

While Sweat’s appeal is clear, the Packers will need to evaluate how pressing their need for an edge rusher is and whether they want to invest heavily in a veteran like Sweat or explore other options. While the team is likely to target defensive linemen this offseason, they may opt to invest more heavily in the interior of the line, or even look to the NFL draft for a promising edge rusher, potentially with their 23rd overall pick.

However, if they pursue a proven veteran, Sweat remains the standout option. That being said, there are other intriguing names on the market that could draw the Packers’ interest. Defensive ends like Malcolm Koonce, Dayo Odeyingbo, and Chase Young are also entering free agency and could provide valuable contributions at a potentially lower cost. If Green Bay decides they need a more seasoned veteran, players like Khalil Mack or DeMarcus Lawrence could be on their radar.

With an estimated $46 million in cap space, the Packers have the flexibility to target top-tier defensive talent. How they approach this critical offseason decision could have a major impact on their ability to compete at a higher level in the 2025 season. For now, all eyes will be on Green Bay as they weigh their options to overhaul their defense, with Josh Sweat emerging as a potential game-changing addition.
